WE ARE MARIANS

The mid-April weekend of 2002 was cloudy. The infamous kalbaishakhi had caused two days of heavy rain early that week. Apprehensions and anxiety were expressed from all well wishers including Mrs. Paula Ghosh – the school principal.

The stage was set for the beginning of a new chapter – WAM (We are Marians) – the musical extravaganza organized by SMESA. The holy sisters lightened the inaugural lamp in the presence of many celebrities including Mr. Gitanath Ganguly – Observer, Green Bench, Kolkata High Court and the charismatic ex-MIC, Sports and Youth Affairs – Late Mr. Subhas Charkraborty.

Cactus – the well known Bangla Band, lit up the field crowded by 3000 audience to a blaze. Assisted by enigmatic effect of the psychedelic lights, high voltage sound systems, boys, men and women, unknowingly started dancing to the tune of the chartbuster numbers – amidst moderately strong windy weather.  A mystic ambience was created.

From then on, everything else from worries of the weather to teething troubles of the organization – all took a back seat. WAM declared that it has come to being and will be a major event of cultural calendar of not only SMESA – but also of the locality.

The following years have only seen more improvement of event management, growing interest among Ex-Marians to be and take part in the WAM and other  SMESA activities.

WAM has already presented the performances by CACTUS, ANJAN DUTTA, KROSSWINDZ, BHOOMI, ABHILASHA, RUPANKAR, JOJO, NEEPOBITHI, SHAMIK , AATMA (Fusion Band), DJ DSEN and CHANDRABINDOO.

The occasion had been graced by many dignitaries and our beloved Christian Brothers. From 2009 another day was added to the musical evening and that magnified the fun of this festive occasion.
